Listening to our Pets

Experiencing nature through the senses of a youngster is wonderful, especially when this youngster is a dog! My home is in Arizona where the sun rises very early in the summer. I take our seven month old Boston Terrier out for walks in the mornings, our backyard is the desert so the walks are full of wonder and adventure. I enjoy watching her body language. When she is tired, she will just plop down, tongue hanging, she has to rest for two minutes and then she is ready to go again. Or when she hears a new sound, she stops all of a sudden, ears perked up, alert and listening. I too stop and listen, almost not breathing to be able to hear what she is hearing. There are lots of birds, bugs, scurrying lizards, rabbits that jump out and disappear in the maze of shrubs and cactus. Then as quickly as she stopped, she resumes the walk as if to say “Never mind, it was nothing.”

I am privileged to have her in our home, she is teaching me a lot about getting in touch with my senses and just be in the moment. A gift we easily loose in this busy world we live in.
