The word RUNE means secret, whisper & mystery. Each RUNE has a particular significance and, depending on whether you choose it and subsequently lay it on a table/ground “upright” or “reversed”, you will be able to address an “issue” and use the RUNE’s meaning to “trigger” your own subconscious as how to deal with the situation. Some RUNES can be read both in their “Upright” (which is toward you) or “Reversed “ (reading away from you); some are in the same mode at the same time -upright AND reversed - no matter how you turn it or place it down.
REVERSED: When a RUNE is not toward the reader, but reads reversed, upside-down, it is noted as REV. The REV meaning differs from upright as being the opposite flowing energies and is a clue in Life’s ebb & flow. Nine RUNES look the same upright or reversed. These have challenges too, which are indicated for the REV meaning. Those Nine Runes are: THORN/THURISAZ (gateway); GIFU/GEBO (partnership/gift); HAGAL (disruption); IS/ISA (standstill); JERA (harvest/year); EOTT/EIWAZ (defense/endings); SIGEL/SOWEL (wholeness/victory); ING/INGUEZ (fertility/beginnings); DAEG/DAGAZ (breakthrough/awakening.
Unlike other forms of divination, when a RUNE is in REV, either by being placed or in their own meaning as a symbol, the reversed meaning doesn’t necessarily have to be a “negative” attribute; rather, it sends up a type of “alert” as if to say, ‘you need to pay special attention to this’, or, ‘this is an area you need to caution against as you move forward’, etc. No matter what direction the RUNE is in, it ALWAYS acts as a teacher, a method of instruction, a reminder of what we are doing or thinking, and as a guide. Your OWN interpretation and seeking your OWN consul when doing a “reading” for yourself is of utmost importance.
Choosing a RUNE each day (before starting each day’s routine) is a good way to find out what you need to “pay attention to” for the day. Before you start, ask yourself, “What will today bring?” or “What energies are flowing my way?” Then, you can either place all the RUNES face down on a surface and move them around with your hands while not looking at the symbols, and THEN pick one that your energy draws you to; or, you can put them all in a bag and move them around within the bag until you randomly feel the urge to pick one out. Either way, the RUNE will pick YOU by what will be the best one for the day.
I encourage people to keep a notebook, or a journal, if you will, of the RUNE picked each day. It is especially important to make a note of the date, and the RUNE you chose, with a brief meaning for that RUNE. It’s also a good idea to keep a small pocket notebook or pad with you during the day, so that any thoughts or events that occur during the day can be noted at the end of the day in your daily journal for the RUNE you picked. You will be amazed at the clarity that comes from this. It’s incredibly meaningful if you happen to pull the SAME RUNE for several days in the same week/month/etc. By keeping a journal, you will be able to follow a pattern and gain even MORE insight as to what is going on with you
